Stories about Africa through textile art
Last summer I had the immense pleasure of meeting Zainab Sumu whose classic, unique, versatile and fun designs are gloriously expressed on her beautiful clothing, scarves and shawls.
Born in Sierra Leone, Zainab’s designs are obviously influenced by her African heritage.
She studied science and then fashion design and art in both Europe and the US where she acquired a deep appreciation for color, texture and design.
She longs to share a familiar and universally personal story which connects all people through music, architecture and nature and which shines through in the stunning bold prints she currently displays in her Zainab Sumu Primitive Modern collection.
Her design process begins with hand-drawn sketches, inspired by each specific geographical, cultural experience . The sketches are then digitized, sized and printed onto material selected carefully by Zainab to enhance each individual design.
All textiles are sustainably produced in Italy, using natural fibres including cashmere, silk, wool, linen and cotton.
Personally I own and lovingly wear a beautifully soft and luxurious shawl from her Gnawa series.
Some years ago, while strolling through PLACE Jemaa el-Fnaa in Marrakech, Zainab stopped to listen to a troupe of local musicians. Originally brought to Morocco as slaves, the Gnawa people held on to their musical heritage and are now celebrated nationwide for their songs, particularly for their lilas; all night performances to bless and rid homes of evil spirits. The haunting trance-like music inspired the drawings that led to this scarf collection.
